Whanganui Central, Manawatū-Whanganui

Tour Guides (Hospitality & Tourism)

Part time

$27.80 per hour

My client is one of Whanganui’s best-known geographical and cultural icons – the beloved Durie Hill Elevator (D.H.E). Operating for more than 105 years (opened in 1919), the elevator is more than just a great tourist destination and experience – it remains a bona fide means of public transport between the city and the popular family suburb of Durie Hill.

A unique opportunity has arisen for an enterprising individual to join the small team of operators/guides to help reinforce and build on the elevator’s already-excellent reputation among visitors and Whanganui residents.

Role:

This is a diverse and interesting role, covering a range of functions and responsibilities, including:

  • Elevator operation, in strict adherence to health and safety guidelines.

  • Exceptional friendly, helpful customer-service.

  • Enthusiastic communication of the elevator’s history, along with present-day Whanganui services and attractions (this will require memorising scripts).

  • Researching and familiarising yourself with Whanganui history, especially regarding public and active transport.

  • Leading guided tours of the tunnel and elevator outside of ordinary operation hours.

  • Promoting and facilitating merchandise sales, and assisting with stock control.

  • Operating the D.H.E’s payment, data entry, and reporting systems.

  • Contributing to cleaning and tidiness around the elevator, tunnel, and office.

  • Driving of replacement shuttles as and when necessary.

  • Familiarising yourself with and adhering to all health and safety policies/protocols.

There is potential advancement for the right person, in collaboration with the Elevator Contract Holder – specifically, areas such as:

  • Team leadership and staff training/oversight.

  • Developing systems and procedures to improve the elevator service and health and safety protocols.

  • Contributing to/writing operations and training manuals.

  • Exploring strategies to expand the elevator service and tour programs.

About You:

To succeed in this unique and interesting role, you will need:

  • Outstanding relational skills and customer service.

  • Strong work ethic – no job too small. You’ll join a hands-on team!

  • Exceptional memory and recall – you’ll become a D.H.E expert!

  • Robust planning and implementation skills – good understanding of systems.

  • Excellent attention-to-detail.

  • Responsibility – this is a predominantly sole-charge role.

  • Fantastic communication skills – story-telling ability is a huge plus!

  • Great computer skills and problem-solving ability.

  • Tireless enthusiasm and positivity – every visitor gets your best!

  • Teachability and willingness to learn.

  • High regard for policies and procedures – especially health and safety.

  • High standard of personal presentation and hygience.

  • Commitment to punctuality, along with good time-management skills.

  • P-endorsement driver licence - or full, clean licence for 2+ years.

  • First Aid Certificate (training provided if required)

It’s possible you’ve excelled in hospitality, retail, customer-service, tourism, or transport sectors. If you’ve had experience in guiding tours – I’m especially eager to talk to you.

What’s On Offer:

My client adheres to Living Wage guidelines, and has a commitment to providing a flexible and fun working environment. You will be part of a unique and rewarding Whanganui story, showing off one of the city’s coolest features and providing a genuine service. You’ll also have the opportunity to be part of the growth of the service, contributing to its future, even as you tell the stories of its past and present!

Working hours are available within the following brackets:
